The British Society of Soil Science (BSSS) recently hosted a webinar in the lunchtime series of Zoom into Soil covering Asbestos in Soils.

The first speaker was Simon Hay, a Senior Environmental Consultant at Arcadis. Simon’s presentation, An Introduction to Land Contamination Risk Assessment: Asbestos and Other Contaminants, provided a brief overview of the Land Contamination Risk Assessment process, including its objectives and the assessment framework. He outlined the conceptual site model and source-pathway-receptor approach, relating this to agricultural settings in a soil environment. Due to its widespread occurrence and the unique challenges it poses, asbestos was discussed along with other potential contaminants.

The second speaker was ACAD Technical Committee member Stewart Powell Tech IOSH, Head of compliance for ACAD Member John F Hunt Environmental, who discussed the Safe Removal and Cleaning of Contaminated Soil which covered planning the work, control measures and disposal.
