Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is a job with an accompanying skills development programme. The job must have a productive purpose and should provide the apprentice with the opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to achieve the apprenticeship.

Through their apprenticeship, apprentices will gain the technical knowledge, practical experience and wider skills they need for their immediate job and future career. The apprentice gains this through a wide mix of learning in the workplace, formal off-the-job training and the opportunity to practise these new skills in a real work environment.

TICA’s Thermal Insulation Apprenticeships consists of on and off the job training on-site experience being met over four years.

During the off the job training period the learner will attend the National Training Centre in Darlington for block periods of two weeks to complete their formal qualifications.

Apprentices in England and Wales will complete one of our Apprentice Standards:

  • L2 Apprentice Standard for Commercial Thermal Insulation Operative
  • Functional Skills L1 English (if the learner does not already have GCSE Grade C or above)
  • On completion of L1 English L2 will be undertaken
  • Functional Skills L1 Maths (if the learner does not already have GCSE Grade C or above)
  • On completion of L1 Maths L2 will be undertaken
  • Employer Rights and Responsibilities
  • PASMA
  • Asbestos Awareness

Or

  • L3 Apprentice Standard for Commercial Thermal Insulation Technician
  • Functional Skills L2 English (if the learner does not already have GCSE Grade C or above)
  • Functional Skills L2 Maths (if the learner does not already have GCSE Grade C or above)
  • Employer Rights and Responsibilities
  • PASMA
  • Asbestos Awareness

All apprentices who undertake a Standard will be required to pass an End Point Assessment which will be undertaken at the National Training Centre, but completed by an independant End Point Assessor. Successful completion of the End Point Assessment results in the achievement of a Certificated Apprentice Qualification.

Apprentices from Scotland will complete a L2 Framework of qualifications:

  • L2 SVQ in Thermal Insulation
  • L2 Technical Certificate in Thermal Insulation
  • Core Skills ICT L4 (if the learner has not completed this at school)
  • Employer Rights and Responsibilities
  • PASMA
  • Asbestos Awareness

Or a L3 Framework of qualifications:

  • L3 SVQ in Thermal Insulation
  • L3 Technical Certificate in Thermal Insulation
  • Employer Rights and Responsibilities
  • PASMA
  • Asbestos Awareness

All apprentices who undertake the Framework are required to pass a practical skills assessment at the end of their Technical Certificate.

The Standards were developed to directly align with the SVQs in Thermal Insulation and the Technical Certificates in Thermal Insulation. All Frameworks and Standards at each level will lead to the same consistent level of skills and competency across the whole of the UK.

The L2 apprenticeship will lead to the Blue TICA Skill Card for a Skilled Operative.

The L3 apprenticeship will lead to the Gold Advanced Craft TICA Skill Card for an Advanced Craft Person or the Gold TICA Skill Card for Supervisors.

When considering which apprenticeship is appropriate, consideration must be given to exactly which skills will be required by the employer at the end of the apprenticeship, and also which prior qualifications and skill levels the candidate holds for maths and English.
