Carbon Reduction Report
2024TICA originally committed to Net Zero carbon on the SME Climate Hub in quarter four of 2021.
2024 represents our third full year of carbon reporting. We have posted our 2024 report a little later than expected. This is in large part because we were compelled to switch from the Normative software to a new carbon reporting software system freely available via the SME Climate Hub. The new software system required us to report in greater detail and investigate previously unconsidered factors such as water usage and recycling of materials. Sourcing and collating this new information took a little time!
This report will help us to prioritise our actions as we aim towards a target of Net Zero by 2030.
Scope 1 Emissions – Including Fuel and Gas for Space Heating
2022 22.1 tonnes of CO²e produced.
2023 0 tonnes of CO²e produced.
2024 7.59 tonnes of CO²e produced.
Last year TICA reported zero Scope 1 emissions. This was because usage for space heating and hot water was included under Scope 2 emissions under the old Normative Business Carbon Calculator software.
In the first quarter of 2024, TICA were still utilising gas fired boilers for the provision of hot water, and our Scope 1 emissions are therefore not zero!
Scope 2 Emissions – Grid Electricity Supply
2022 17.7 tonnes of CO²e produced.
2023 27.3 tonnes of CO²e produced.
2024 14.8 tonnes of CO²e produced.
Last year TICA reported natural gas related emissions under Scope 2. This has been moved back into Scope 1, and we would therefore expect to see a drop in the production of CO²e in scope 2.
However, we can clearly see that the electrification of heating has noticeably reduced the carbon footprint at TICA House.
The chart below indicates the reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions once the vagaries of the reporting methodology have been accounted for:
Scope 3 – Supply Chain Emissions
2022 198 tonnes of CO²e produced.
2023 166 tonnes of CO²e produced.
2024 112 tonnes of CO²e produced.
It is encouraging to see that as our reporting concerning Scope 3 emissions develops, our overall emissions continue to reduce. However, we need to be mindful that as apprentice numbers increase, the amount of materials we require will also increase.
Overall Performance
2022 237 tonnes of CO²e produced.
2023 193 tonnes of CO²e produced.
2024 134 tonnes of CO²e produced.
Our Expectations for 2025
We are hopeful that we will be able to record zero Scope 1 emissions for 2025. However, with the training centre getting busier and staff numbers increasing, Scope 2 emissions will be a big challenge going forward.
TICA are developing initiatives to keep thermal insulation out of the waste stream by offering free TIPCHECK (Technical Insulation Performance Check) surveys and installations to a limited number of local not-for-profit organizations. This is allowing TICA to give apprentices some additional field work experience whilst also allowing the insulation to stay in place and do its job!
Our Net Zero Initiatives are Award Winning!
TICA are proud to announce that we have won the Darlington Strong Communities Net Zero Award for our carbon reduction work within the local community!
