15 April 2016 – Wise words and Small spaces

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been doing a lot of metalwork.  It’s something I particularly enjoy, and want to do more of.

I feel I’ve learnt a lot since joining the team at CGB and working one to one with a senior experienced member of staff has really helped.  I think I’m progressing in the challenges he sets me, and I feel I will continue to improve.

I’ve been told … “If you can do the hard things, you can do anything, then you will be able to do the easy things even better.”

I try to keep this in mind when I am squashed in between pipes and walls trying to lag and metal pipework – where it’s tight, it’s tough.  I like the fact that when I’m set challenges I want to just get on with it, get it done and make my mentor surprised with the finish and the quality of work I can achieve.

I also spent some time matting up over flanges and helping fit flange and valve boxes. Throughout the week I also worked with another member of staff when my supervisor was off. I was showed what work had to be done, then I was left to put what I had learnt into practice. Overall, it went well considering the access to the job and the space provided.

Through the week we have daily risk assessment sessions and a weekly toolbox talk about things that have been brought up through members of staff that we need to be aware of.

I am having a brilliant time learning new things day in day out.  That’s enabling me to get on with jobs independently and figure things out for myself to learn which way works best for me.
